One of the desired career paths that many young folks choose is fashion design. Understanding the foundation needed to create a garment from scratch is a requirement for pursuing a career in fashion. Within the field of fashion design, there are many topics that need to be learned, one of which is draping. 

History of draping –

Around 3500 BCE, Mesopotamians and Ancient Egyptians developed drapery. Draped silhouettes like the chiton, peplos, chlamys, and himation were created in Greek fashion. The toga is a piece of clothing that drapes and wraps around the body. It was created by the Etruscans and Ancient Romans.

Interestingly, the drapes that served as the primary form of clothing for the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans also served as a stage or phase in the development of fashion couture. sufficient to facilitate later processes like pattern cutting and stitching 

Importance of draping –

Draping is less about proportion and more about the fit and the fabric.

  1. It aids in understanding human body proportions, obtaining the desired shape and fit of the garments, and creating fresh, modern looks.
  2. Assists in learning about various fabric grains and their advantages .
  3. It also defines basic fashion terms like high waist, empire line, low waist, princes line, style line, halter, and so on.
  4. Improves concentration, accuracy, and manual skills, as well as design creativity.
  5. It enables the processing of various types of fabric as well as the creation of form and harmony.

Draping is undoubtedly essential in the field of fashion design, based on the information presented above and other factors. and In order to learn different draping techniques with muslin, an end-of-module display was organized to encourage students to improve their draping skills. The students from the BSc Fashion design & Garment Management– 2020 batch experimented with manipulating fabric with gathers and pleats. They also experimented with the silhouettes and lengths of the garments Any designer must understand the method of positioning and pinning fabric on a dress form, and fashion draping is a key tool in this process. This assists in giving any clothing design a well-developed structure.
