Industrial visit to Gramins Lifestyle which is located in Kochi, Kerala was organised by JD Institute Cochin for the students pursuing their Diploma in Fashion Design and Bsc. in Fashion and Apparel Design, 2020 batch as a part of their Textile Appreciation module. An Industrial visit to such firms and industries help students understand and gain practical knowledge on how work is processed in the industry.

The Gramins Lifestyle is textile firm that was started in 2016 which is engaged majorly in Khadi/Handloom apparels, handicrafts and organic costumes. They have a production unit in Vyttila, Ernakulam, Kerala with sales outlets in Centre Square Mall, MG Road and Ernakulam, Kerala. They are also associated with over 1000’s of craft based rural producers in India which helps create a base for skilled sustainable rural employment, and preserving India’s Traditional handicrafts in the process. Their apparels are 100% hand woven and within the affordable price ranges.

Gramins mission is to bring inspiration and innovation to traditional weavers and thereby create a better life for them in the coming future, to provide marketing support to the artisans and weavers by obtaining the products and selling through Gramins sales outlets and online platform, Attract young generation to Handloom and Khadi by providing them with the designs of their choice, Offers the customers the best possible service, products, quality and value, Creates rural employment opportunities and sustainable income to the rural artisans and weavers. Their products range from khadi and handloom kurta’s, handloom sarees, handloom dhoti, handicrafts to eco-friendly bags (cloth, jute, banana fibre, screw pine, water hyacinth), handmade soaps, organic spices and organic cosmetics.
Mr. Krishnadas Prasad, who is the founder and owner of Gramins Lifestyle and a well known photographer, was fortunately available at the venue at the time of the visit. They were even given the opportunity to view an oil painting that was displayed at the Art Gallery.

Industrial visit to the Gramin Lifestyle has provided the students an opportunity to learn about the handloom and the procedure of work that is involved in hand woven fabrics. It has given them an insight on ways to incorporate sustainability into their daily lives. At JD Institute Cochin, every student is given the opportunity to be a part of the working in an industry to gain knowledge and practical understanding of how work is conducted in an industry related to the field that they are pursuing.
