WORLD HERITAGE DAY – Visit To Hill Palace Museum by ADM Students
Every year on April 18, which is also known as the International Day for Monuments and Sites, World Heritage Day is honored. This day is dedicated to raising public awareness of the importance of cultural heritage and the necessity of preserving historical spots all over the world.
On 18 th April 2023 Academy of Design and Management Cochin under the guidance of JD Institute of Fashion Technology‘s Fashion Department organized a trip to Kochi’s Hill Palace Museum as part of the celebrations for Heritage Day under the mentorship of Rania Shajahan, Harry Laibin- Faculty For Fashion department .
The Hill Palace is a stunning historic palace that previously served as the Kochi royal family’s principal residence. It is also considered as Kerala’s first Heritage Museum, which is presently renowned for being a full-fledged Ethno-Archaeological Museum. The palace complex is made up of 49 buildings and was constructed using Keralan traditional building techniques. Around it, there are more than 52 acres of terraced ground. Students of MSc in Fashion Design & Management and BSc in Fashion design & garment Management had the chance to look over the museum’s different exhibits and discover more about the Kochi royal family’s history and culture during their tour. They were able to witness firsthand the palace’s magnificent grandeur and unique design features like oil paintings, murals, sculptures, manuscripts, and artifacts of the Kochi royal family on display. Antique ceramics from the Far East, Kudakkallu (tombstone), Thoppikkallu (hood stone), laterite memorials, and wooden memorials from ancient civilisations such as the Indus Valley and Harappa can also be found here. It even contains a gallery with contemporary art. It gives us great pride to have antiquities of such worth and significance put here. Through the many artifacts and antiques on display, the students also acquired insight into the royal family’s way of life and traditions.
Under the guidance of JD Institute of Fashion Technology‘s Fashion Department, Academy of Design and Management students had the opportunity to visit the Hill Palace Museum, which was a valuable educational experience that helped students gain a deeper appreciation and comprehension of India’s rich cultural heritage. As well the visit could also help in serving as a source of inspiration for the fashion aspects.
